With cold precision and without judgement, Ivan Ikić observes several young citizens of a small, Serbian town. Their lives are focused around the neighborhood carpet-hanger and football club, while their primary form of expression is violence. The main character is the fatherless Luka. “Barbarians” is far removed from the typical tale of sensitive youth lost in ruthless reality. It is a terrifying portrait of an unbelievable, hopeless world, where violence has no justification – it is a value in itself, not the means to fight for a better life.
