“Mustang” is a delicate, empathetic and humorous portrait of five sisters drawn with the swift hand of a debuting director – Deniz Gamze Ergüven. Her camera observes the blooming girls (played by a very talented group of young actresses), who are entering adulthood in a conservative region of Turkey under the guidance of their uncle and grandma. The protagonist’s adolescent transgressions – which seem quite innocent from a European standpoint – clash with the cultural pattern. It brutally silences every display of female sexuality and inserts them into the framework of arranged marriage.
