Tobias Morgan shooting in Katowice!

'...to try to grasp reality in its fluctuating, inchoate state – not flinching – and coming back with something hard, unbreakable.' John A Riley

'Bękart' is a Polish language feature film about a football hooligan, Tomasz. It is through his eyes that almost all the events of the film are experienced - a life defined by brutality, primal emptiness and deep cynicism.

The film is an international collaboration between two main parties: the International Film Festival Ars Independent (Katowice, Poland) and Autr Films (London, UK), a small independent production company run by filmmaker Tobias Elijah Morgan. Morgan used to work as a theatre director. He is a founder and producer of the MUBI Garage, an independent film screening and Video on Demand platform for emerging filmmakers. He also founded and directed Cine Foundation International, the organization fighting for the human rights in the field of cinematography.

At the IFF Ars Independent he met with Katayoun Shahabi, the Iranian producer and distributor of the films of Mohammad Rasoulof. When Shahabi was imprisoned in September 2011, we proposed Morgan to make a film about conflicted ideologies, social injustice and revolution, and dedicate it to her. Unable to film in Iran, Morgan extrapolated an idea of 'representing a thing by its opposite' and wrote the script for 'Bękart'.
