ForePlay. Join the conference about erotica in video games
The Ars Independent festival does not cease to surprise. Every year, the party provokes discussion, this time taking up the subject of eroticism in video games. The ForePlay scientific conference will talk critically about interactive sexuality.
Video games are still learning what to do with their most exciting trait: interactivity. Digital love and sex are a particular challenge. How to avoid reducing complicated relationships and emotionts to binary relations and choices? How to portray feelings, yet keep intimacy without losing player agency and the medium’s character? How do we balance good fun or sensuality so that it doesn’t end up vulgar? Soon or later, video games will have to find answers to these and other questions. Ars Independent, of course, won’t solve every problem – but it wants to provoke the discussion and take part in it.
The ForePlay conference will be a part of Katowice’s Ars Independent Festival 2019 (24.29.09). The event invites young researchers, scientists, scholars, practicioners and anyone interested in discussing erotica, sensuality, sex or love in interactive art and entertainment.
The conference will take place on Friday, September 27 in Katowice Miasto Ogrodów (pl. Sejmu Śląskiego 2, Katowice). A detailed program and hourly schedule will be announced in August.
The deadline for abstracts and submissions passes on July 15. The submission form is available below.
It’s worth mentioning that the conference is scientific (in other words, you may get the relevant points #CashMoney).
“Trading cards. Video strip tease. Let’s (fore)plays. Serenades and romances. Points and zones. Armored g-strings. Awkward movements and fade outs. Interactive entertainment often reveals itself as infantile in its approach to sex and love. But discussing interactive erotica can be just as childish, reduced to pointing fingers and laughing,” adds Jacek Wandzel, the conference organizer.
The event is organized by the cultural institution Katowice City of Gardens and the City of Katowice. The event’s academic partner is the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
