Serap is a young Turkish girl who divides her time between a draining job at a clothing factory and light sleep in her sister’s apartment. When her humble life falls apart before her eyes, morality loses importance over survival, and relationships become pure calculations. Emine Emel Balci’s debut is a picture of contemporary Turkey – one removed from picturesque shots of Istanbul and cheap exoticism. This well-crafted social drama speaks tastefully about human flaws, avoiding needless moralizing; the assessment of its characters is left to the viewer.
